About SUM's VAT Consultant Dubai

Since VAT was introduced across the UAE at 5% on 1 January 2018, the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has progressively intensified its compliance enforcement. Penalties for late registration, incorrect return filings, and missed deadlines have risen sharply  and FTA audit activity continues to increase across all business sectors in Dubai and the wider UAE.

SUM is a Dubai-based VAT consultancy providing end-to-end VAT compliance services to businesses of all sizes  from first-time registration and quarterly return filing through to complex input tax recovery, refund applications, and audit representation. Our proactive approach means you're never caught off-guard: we monitor deadlines, flag regulatory changes, and identify VAT-saving opportunities before they pass.

How We Work

SUM's VAT Consultant Dubai Process

01
VAT Registration Assessment
SUM evaluates your annual taxable turnover, supply types, and business activities to determine mandatory or voluntary registration obligations and the optimal registration date.
02
FTA Registration
We complete your VAT registration on EmaraTax, obtain your VAT TRN, and configure any tax group, branch, or divisional registrations required.
03
Bookkeeping Alignment
We review your accounting records to ensure VAT is correctly captured, coded, and reconciled across all sales invoices, purchase bills, and expenses.
04
Return Preparation
Each quarter, SUM prepares your VAT 201 Return — computing output tax, recoverable input tax, adjustments for bad debts and corrections, and the net VAT payable or refundable position.
05
Filing & Payment
We submit your return before the 28th of the month following the tax period and advise on the most efficient payment method to avoid late payment surcharges.
06
Continuous Compliance
SUM monitors FTA announcements, advises on new transaction types, and conducts periodic VAT health-checks to maintain ongoing compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mandatory VAT registration applies to businesses with taxable supplies or imports exceeding AED 375,000 per year. Voluntary registration is available from AED 187,500. Failure to register on time attracts FTA penalties of up to AED 20,000.

The standard UAE VAT rate is 5%. Certain supplies are zero-rated (exports, international transport, specific healthcare and education services) and others are exempt (bare land, residential property supply). Correct classification is critical and a common source of audit findings.

The majority of UAE businesses file VAT returns quarterly. Businesses with annual taxable supplies exceeding AED 150 million may be assigned a monthly tax period by the FTA.

Yes — VAT paid on business-related purchases that directly relate to taxable supplies is generally recoverable as input tax, provided you hold a valid tax invoice. Certain categories (e.g. employee entertainment, non-business use) are blocked from recovery.

SUM prepares a fully documented refund application via EmaraTax, including supporting schedules and reconciliations. We manage all FTA queries and follow-up to maximise both the approval rate and speed of refund payment.

Large refund claims, inconsistencies between customs import data and VAT returns, sector-specific audit initiatives, or random selection by the FTA can all trigger a VAT audit. SUM provides complete audit representation, documentation defence, and FTA communication management.

Late filing triggers an immediate AED 1,000 penalty (AED 2,000 for repeat offences). Late payment attracts a 2% immediate surcharge on Day 1, 4% on Day 7, and 1% per day thereafter — capped at 300% of the outstanding tax amount.
